Building the first GS prototype

easy on the Planet

We use environmentally-friendly magnesium to create the Gocycle GS’ high-tech, durable, ultra-lightweight frame and wheels. It’s the only bicycle in the world to have an injection moulded magnesium frame and wheels. The special process is known as Thixomolding® and does not produce any ozone depleting SF6 emissions, but will still give the rider the similar weight and structural benefits as carbon fibre. Magnesium is widely available and easy to re-cycle.

the Fastest Wheels

Gocycle Pitstopwheels are the fastest bicycle wheels in the world!

The Gocycle Pitstopwheels are the fastest wheels in the world. In September 2013 at Battle Mountain, Nevada the Gocycle Pitstopwheels went 83 mph.

GS Prototype Design and Testing

One of the new parts that we developed for the Gocycle GS is the oversized handlebar. It’s hydroformed (that’s where you inject high pressure oil into an aluminium tube to form it out into a moulded shape) meaning we can route the cables cleanly, make a chunky handlebar that looks great and is structurally better – lighter and stiffer! All of the GS parts draw on our years of experience designing and testing components to international bicycle and ebike standards.

Gocycle has been mentioned in many press reviews as the best electric bike.
The Gocycle is an award winning electric bike. Reddot Award winner. Eurobike award winner. Taipei cycle show award winning.

How do I choose my frame size?

You don’t need to worry about that! Gocycle’s Vgonomic frame design means it can be adjusted to fit you, your partner, and your friends.

Will it fit me?

Yes! The Gocycle’s Vgonomic frame design gives universal fitting from 6’5” (Gocycle’s designer is 6’3”) to 5' and you can order a compact seat post after the campaign that will fit heights down to 4’6”.

Where is the Gocycle GS made?

We source all of the parts from the USA, Europe, Taiwan, and China. We run quality control checks on them and bring them into our factory in the UK. We then ship them to our bicycle assembly partner in Poland where the Gocycle GS will be assembled. Then we ship to our warehouses in the UK and North America and then on to your door step! We’ve got a strong supply chain that we have been working with for more than a decade.

Is there a more secure lock available than the cable coil lock?

Yes. The Gocycle Lockholster is available and fits neatly to the side of the frame. It is a very secure lock that has a silver European rating accepted and independent assessor of bicycle security approved.

How do I use the electric assist?

The electric motor is control by how hard you press on the pedals. You can adjust this with the GocycleConnect App. And there is also a boost button on the handlebar that you can press to access power in some modes.

Can the battery self-recharge during use?

Regenerative braking is not appropriate for bicycles at this time. While some products advertise this feature, on inspection, you will find that it increases weight, complexity and cost, and the amount of energy recovered is usually less than 10%.

How long will the battery last?

The battery should last for many years depending on your riding and we offer a one-year warranty.

Where is the battery?

At first glance, the Gocycle GS does not look like a conventional electric bike because we have neatly hidden the battery inside the frame. But don’t worry, should you ever need to replace the battery, it’s easily accessible.

Do I have to remove the battery to charge it?

No. It is not necessary to remove the battery from the frame to charge it.

How much will Gocycle cost to charge?

The charging cost is equal to having a 100W light bulb on for 3 hours. In the US and Canada, where KW/hour electricity costs average about 13 cents, the cost to recharge a Gocycle battery, from empty, would be about 3.9 cents.

How long will the brake pads last?

The brake pads should last the lifetime of the product. Depending on your riding style and environment you may need to replace the brake pads from time to time.

How do I change the brake pads?

It is highly unlikely that you will need to replace the brake pads. However, if the need arises, you can find full instructions of how to replace the pads in the Owner’s Manual.

How long will the brake disks last?

Brake disks will last the lifetime of the product.

Can I change the tire and tube for an alternative?

Yes, you can choose from many standard tires. Search on the Internet or ask your local cycle dealer for a recommendation of tyres for BMX/20in/406 size wheels. We recommend 20in x 1.75in (406mm x 47mm) size. Tires wider than 1.75in (47mm) may not fit and will rub on the frame. The inner tube must be suitable for a 20in x 1.75in (406mm x 47mm) wheel size.

What is different about the Gocycle GS Model and the Gocycle G3?

The Gocycle G3 is higher priced than the GS. The Gocycle GS has a mechanical shifter whereas the G3 has electronic shifting. There are some external cable routings on the Gocycle GS whereas all cables are internal on the G3. The G3 has electronic rotary power and shift controls, and an integrated LED dash board display that shows speed, efficiency, battery state of charge, and gear selection. The G3 comes with an automotive style integrated daytime running light using light pipe technology. The G3 comes in single colours including metalic blue and mat black. G3 also has premium comfort grips, seat, and pedals. The G3 handlebar stem is adjustable in height and reach.

How do I get access to the chain?

It should not be necessary for you to gain access to the chain. It is lubricated, self-tensioning and sealed within the Cleandrive®.

Do I need to adjust the chain?

No.

Do I need to oil the chain?

No.

Can I use Gocycle off road?

Gocycle has been designed as an urban-specific two-wheeler. We do not recommend that you take Gocycle off road; however, riding on smooth gravel bike paths should be fine.

Do I need to wear a helmet?

We strongly recommend you ride with an approved bicycle helmet.

Is there a compact seat post height available and what is the seat height from the ground?

Yes, you can buy a compact seat post. The height from the top of the seat to the ground for the Gocycle S standard seat post in the lowest position is: 880mm or 2' 10.6"; the same with the compact seat post in the lowest position is: 810mm or 2'8". Note that the rear suspension will compress around 1/2 - 1" measured at the saddle when the rider's weight is on the Gocycle.

Are the tyres the puncture-resistant variety?

    • Richard

Hi Rob, the standard tires are our Gocycle Performance tires which offer exceptional rolling performance with reasonable puncture resistance. If you want more durable tires, we sell the Schwalbe Big Ben tire which will provide a higher level of puncture resistance. Kind Regards, Richard

The stock tires are not puncture resistant at all But optional upgraded are completely Schwabie Big Ben ) are very puncture resistant Also the best tire for the higher speed of 25 miles an hour But also slime tubes are better than the Schwable tubes For USA 🇺🇸 East Coast urbanization rides !

Hi Norman, it really depends on if you plan to pedal and use the motor, or just cruise on the motor. On flat ground just cruising on the motor we well inflated tires, you should be fine. If you plan to ride up hills, using both motor and pedals will give you the best performance. Maybe visit one of our dealers for a test ride if you are unsure.

    HI ya’all,

All engineering challenges seem to be addressed except the travel by air plane. The TSA and other regulators require a 160 watt/hr battery.
Can we get the battery split into two parts meeting air travel requirements?

    Darrin

    • Richard

Hi Darrin, travelling by air these days with high capacity lithium ebikes is challenging. We have worked on some concepts for breaking down the pack, but it does get problematic in terms of certification and complexity. But we know where you are coming from and are keeping this in mind. Gocycle Front Pannier

Hi all, some of the comments have been about accessories. Here’s a short video on the Gocycle Front Pannier. Very useful and makes shopping for groceries fun!

I know on some folding bikes, putting panniers on the rear rack is a problem because they interfere with pedaling. I’m hoping to use my ortliebs on the GS–will that have the same issue, or is the angle of the rack enough to avoid it?

Also, how much does the upgraded charger cost?

    thanks!

1 Handlebar adjustment in Height and Reach:
    optional for GS –
and optimized for a perfectly UPRIGHT rider’s position

2 More Modular Luggage Elements with added volumes IN FRONT

GS is at a better pricepoint and still has key G3 features in tact, however there are a couple of design issues that mean I won’t cancel my order for an electric Brompton just yet. Gocycle’s integral battery is technically a great design feature feature, but as primarily a leisure machine, the fact that I can’t leave the bike in the car boot and charge the battery in a hotel room is a problem. Also the docking station seems to have been designed for standing in a hallway rather than stacking a couple of quick fold bikes in a car boot. Maybe we’re not the target market but as a couple with a car who would like to drive and then ride a bike along a towpath or easy country track it doesn’t quite fit in its current incarnation. Yes I found the G3 rides better than a Brompton and the Gocycle’s larger wheels do make a difference to stabilty.

Hi Alistair, there’s still time to try to convince you then!:). But in all seriousness, the Brompton is a fantastic product – probably the best folding bicycle in the world IMO. In my early development of the Gocycle, I was trying to combine quick folding with electric power. I actually succeeded, and the battery was quick removable too. But over time with practical usage, I started to realize that a folding bike like the Brompton really needs to be no more than 25 lbs, and when you add the extra weight of the battery and motor – even if detachable, you tend to compromise the core ethos of a classic folder like the Brompton. The other interesting point that you realize when owning an electric bike is that range anxiety and charging are far less important in your decision making as compared with say ride quality and comfort in the riding position. So we have chosen to not compromise on those points. For sure the Brompton is the best when it comes to folding, but give the Gocycle GS your top consideration. For the riding you are describing, you may well want the added tire volume that the larger 20″ wheel will give you. After-all, you’re travelling to enjoy the ride on the tow path rather than enjoying watching your battery charge in the hotel room. Kind Regards, Richard

I see that Gocycle GS handle bar is not height adjustable. Can a 6’2 individual expect a comfortable ride ?

Hello Sisya, If you look at the update #1 here is this trail you can see the differences. Yes the GS does not have height adjustment on the handlebars. But it does have reach adjustment which is most important. I am 6’3″ and feel very comfortable on the Gocycle. The G3 and GS share the same size frame and geometry which is proven to be very ergonomic. Thanks, Richard

I’ve got small hands/short fingers, can the brake leavers be adjusted to accommodate this so I’m not overtstretching to use them?

Hi Phil, yes the brake levers have reach adjustment for optimal ergonomics.

I live in Medellín, Colombia, it’s a mountainous terrain. I was wondering how good is the bike when going uphill?

Hello Andrea, the Gocycle is designed to work with you – like a hybrid. So if you are inputting normal pedaling, with the motor, the hills will be a breeze! But if you are expecting not to pedal and just have the motor take you up the hill, I’d not recommend that you expect much more than your battery draining fast :). Pedal + Motor for hills is the fastest and easiest way up! Richard

I know there are mounts available for a smartphone. Is there also a convenient USB point so that the smartphone can be charged?

Hi Paul, great question. Currently not, but we are working on it for the future. What I do, and I use this while travelling also, is to purchase one of the many auxiliary/secondary external batteries for my phone which can charge it too. I don’t know about you, but I have found that even USB ports in cars cannot charge the phone faster than the GPS drains the phone. I recently took a trip to the Eurobike show in Germany and was driving with Google maps on my phone, and power was draining faster than the car usb could charge it. I plugged in my auxiliary battery and it charged right up no problems. Kind Regards, Richard

I was thinking of replacing the standard tyres with the Schwalbe Big Bens which you recommend. These seem to be 20 x 2.15 however the FAQs section on the website says not to use a tyre with a width greater than 20 x 1.75.

This is a bit confusing but I assume that the Big Ben’s are suitable and probably the BB Plus?

Hi Phil, good question, the general FAQ is there as a conservative recommendation since tires do vary in design and performance. But we do have good historical data on the Big Ben so that is why we can recommend it as an option. Kind Regards, Richard
